Alcohol & The Holidays

The holidays usually involve family time, games, movies, food, and possibly drinks. The holidays may involve less family members this year, but that doesn’t necessarily mean less alcohol for some. Alcohol consumption has increased during the pandemic and when ABC stores were deemed essential it didn’t help lower those rates (ABC News, September 29, 2020). Many people are still trying to figure out how to navigate our “new normal” since a global pandemic wasn’t on our to-do list in 2020, but we encourage you to consider a few things during these trying times.

Questions to consider when drinking with your family:

  1. What message am I sending if I drink in excess around my underage child?
  2. Have I had conversations about responsible drinking with them?
  3. Are the conversations I have about alcohol realistic?
  4. Do my conversations with others reinforce alcohol use as a coping skill during stressful times?
  5. What messages am I sending my underage child if I allow them to drink with me or another adult in the house?

Info to consider:

“One-third of Fairfax County students (33.7%) reported drinking alcohol at least once in their lifetime, ranging from 18.8% of eighth-grade students to half of twelfth-grade students (49.4%). One in seven students (15.2%) reported drinking alcohol in the past month, ranging from 4.5% of eighth-grade students to 27.7% of twelfth-grade students.” (FCPS Youth Survey 2020)

“Female students reported higher rates of alcohol use in their lifetime (36.1% compared to 31.2% of male students), in the past month (17.1% and 13.1%, respectively), and binge drinking in the past two weeks (7.3% and 6.5%, respectively)” (FCPS Youth Survey 2020).

Family Engagement Month

National Family Engagement Month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. More than 35 years of research shows that the most effective way to increase student achievement is for families to be actively involved in the education of their child. Strong parental and family support is vital to the well-being and success of students. FCPS has many resources for families designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.

The national standards for family-school partnerships include welcoming all families, communicating effectively, supporting student success, speaking up for every child, sharing power, and collaborating with the community.

The following resources are available to all FCPS families. Visit the links below to learn more about workshops and classes for families, digital and printable resources for early childhood, mental health, military families, special education, multilingual and wellness topics.

Family Liaisons

Did you know that every school has a family liaison? Family liaisons will welcome and orient families who are new to the school and community, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can also help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.

If you have questions or would like more information, our family liaison at Coates Elementary is Solangie McPherson.  You can scan the QR code to add her to your phone contacts, call 703-713-3232, or email [email protected]

Solangie habla español e inglés.

November is Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

Free Tutoring

Does your child need homework help or feedback on their writing? How about a practice quiz to get ready for a test? Tutor.com is open to FCPS students in all grades, on-demand, 24/7, at no cost to families. Learn more.

FCPS Calendar Survey Coming Soon!

In an annual planning process, FCPS uses input from the community to help develop the school year calendar for the following year. The Calendar Survey will be sent to parents/caregivers, employees, and students in grades 7-12 next week.

Our framework for creating the calendar is available online to ensure transparency, as we work to build a calendar that is inclusive and equitable.

FCPS Strategic Planning that Reaches All

The strategic planning process is a community-wide effort. There will be many opportunities to share feedback or participate in a community meeting. We want our community to stay informed and be involved. You can help!

If you are an active member of a community organization or group who people look to for information, please consider signing up to be a key communicator during the strategic planning process. FCPS key communicators should have an interest in sharing information about the school division and encouraging involvement. Key communicators will:

  • Receive regular updates including news, information, future events, and engagement opportunities.
  • Share the information they receive with their group in a timely manner.
  • Encourage group participation in engagement and feedback opportunities where appropriate and possible.

If you or someone from your organization would like to serve as an FCPS key communicator during the strategic planning process, please submit this form by Monday, November 28

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

Beginning on October 18, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 4. All results are confidential.

Thanksgiving Lunch is Back on the Menu

This year, the Thanksgiving lunch menu for students will return on Thursday, November 17, 2022.  Unfortunately, staffing and supply chain challenges continue to impact daily operations; and, as a result, the lunch will not be open to guests. We are disappointed at this news but hope next year will allow for families to celebrate with us once again.

PTA Family Movie Night Tonight

Come join us tonight for Family Movie Night 6:30-8:00pm!  The PTA will be showing the movie, "Minions" in the cafeteria.  They will have concessions and t-shirts for purchase.  Please bring a blanket or towel to sit on.

All students must have an adult to attend.  No student drop-offs!

Social Emotional Learning and Screener

Students in grades K-2 will no longer participate in the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) screener. Instead, the Child Behavior Rating Scale administered in kindergarten, existing attendance, and behavior data will be used to determine necessary social emotional instruction and supports. School teams will use these measures alongside family input, as they develop their understanding of students’ needs and strategies to support them.

Students in grades 3-12 will be able to participate in the SEL screener. School teams and families use this information to develop positive school cultures and support students academically and personally. This year, students will participate in the screener in the fall (October/November) and spring (March). Parents are able to opt their child out of taking the SEL screener. Read more about SEL and signature practices online.

Coates Attains Full Accreditation Status

After two years of accreditation waivers for all Virginia schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) reinstated review of school performance based on 2021-22 student outcomes. Coates ES is fully accredited for 2022-23 as a result of this review. No Fairfax County public schools received a status of “accreditation denied.”

For 2022-23, school accreditation designations are based on school quality measures for:

  • Academic achievement (English, mathematics, and science).
  • Academic achievement gaps (English and mathematics).

School quality indicators receive a rating of performance level one (meets or exceeds state standard or sufficient improvement), two (near state standard or sufficient improvement), or three (below state standard).

For 2022-23 ratings based on 2021-22 outcomes, Coates ES received the following performance level ratings:

  • LEVEL One in English achievement.
  • LEVEL One in mathematics achievement.
  • LEVEL One in science achievement.
  • LEVEL One in the English achievement gap.
  • LEVEL One in the mathematics achievement gap.

Virginia School Quality Profiles offer a listing of overall accreditation status by school on the Fairfax County Public Schools division report. You may find detailed information about our schools’ data and outcomes for each quality indicator by selecting [SCHOOL NAME] from this division listing. School details can also be found through the Virginia School Quality Profiles search page. You will see chronic absenteeism performance reported here, as well, but this indicator is not part of Virginia accreditation ratings this year.

Importance of Strong Attendance Habits

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

Join Our PTA

Coates is proud to have a wonderful Parent Teacher Association (PTA) that works with the principal to make Coates a great school. PTA volunteers can help in many different ways. Some help out with planning community events for the school, some give a few hours to help the office or library staff with tasks, and some help raise money to buy things the school needs. Any parent can help!

Labor Day Holiday- No School Friday & Monday

Friday, September 2, and Monday, September 5, are part of the Labor Day holiday for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day.

We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends.

Attendance is Key

One of the most important things your child can do to achieve academic success is also one of the most basic: going to school every day. In fact, research has shown that your child's attendance record may be the biggest factor influencing his or her academic success. By attending class regularly, your child is more likely to keep up with the daily lessons and assignments, which will leave them better prepared to demonstrate their understanding on tests and quizzes.  And while your child may be able to make up the work, they are still missing roughly six hours of instruction for every day they are absent from school.  This is valuable differentiated and often individualized instruction that is extremely difficult for a teacher to make up during regular school hours.

Regular school attendance can also help students with language acquisition while supporting the development of social skills.  Just by being present at school, your child is learning and practicing the communication and collaboration skills necessary to succeed in our world today.  Through daily interactions with their peers and the school community, they are learning to be good citizens by participating in school events and activities as they grow and develop a broader world view.

Your commitment to school attendance will send a message to your child that education is a priority for your family, going to school every day is a critical part of educational success, and that it's important to take your responsibilities for learning seriously.

What you can do?

  1. Plan Ahead
  • Teach your child how to set and use an alarm clock and set up a morning routine for them to follow.
  • Anticipate bad weather or any car problems that might delay you in the morning.
  • Have your children’s clothes laid out, lunches prepared, and backpack ready to go the night before.
  • Schedule routine check-ups and other medical appointments well in advance for student holidays and for late afternoon times that will limit the impact on instruction for your child.
  • Plan holiday celebrations or family trips during weekends or school vacations. In the case of family emergencies or unexpected trips, talk to your child's teacher as far in advance as possible and set up a way that your child can work ahead or bring important homework on the trip.
  1. Stay Involved and Informed
  • Be aware of your child’s attendance record and report absences promptly to the main office via phone (703-713-3030) or the online form.
  • Stay involved with your child's daily experiences at school by asking how the school day went, and then listening carefully to what your child shares with you about both the successes and struggles. This will help you identify any anxieties your child may have about coming to school and will allow you to prepare them for attendance both physically and mentally. If you need support for dealing with anxieties about coming to school for your child, please schedule a conference with your child’s teacher or school counselor.
  • Check homework completion each night to gage your child’s understanding of assignments and communicate regularly with your child’s teacher to learn how best to support specific learning needs at home. Homework is designed for students to practice what is learned in school and there will typically be an element of “productive struggle” as students practice new skills.  Remind students that it is ok not to know everything, but that their effort is what is most important.
  1. Practice a Healthy Lifestyle
  • Make sure that your child eats a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • Make sure that your child has opportunities to exercise every day through sports or playtime outside.
  • Make sure your child gets at least 9 hours of sleep each night so they can wake up feeling refreshed in the morning.
  • Establish a bedtime and a routine that will allow your child to relax before they go to sleep. Keep the more stimulating activities, like television, to the early evening hours and encourage your children to read before going to sleep each night.

By making your child's school attendance a priority, you will be taking an important step in supporting your child's school success, while setting a great example each day.  We appreciate your attention to this matter and we are here to help w/ planning and solutions that will lead to a consistent attendance record and overall academic optimism here at school.

Consent for Digital Resources

Families, We Need Your Consent for Select Digital Resources.

At Coates, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: Adopted digital resources.

Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: FCPS Digital resources.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources listed until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

Superintendent Community Conversations

Please save the date for a very special event! Dr. Michelle Reid, FCPS superintendent, will host a Community Conversation at Westfield HS on 9/20/22, 6:30-7:30 p.m. This event will be a unique opportunity to help Dr. Reid get to know our school community and learn more about her vision for our district.

Language interpretation will be provided, as available, as well as child care and light refreshments. Please register to attend.

Covid-19 Diagnostic Testing Available

COVID-19 diagnostic testing is available at no cost for all currently enrolled FCPS students on select dates throughout the year when transmission may be highest. Diagnostic testing is provided at designated times and locations for those who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19.

Testing will be available September 6-8 and 12-14. Visit the testing website for information on locations and how to register for an appointment.

For years, the Coates PTA has helped the school by providing community events for our families, subsidizing the overall costs of field trips, raising money for technology for students, and boosting teacher morale.  Typical PTA events include our annual Fall Festival, Family Movie Nights, International Night, Spelling Bee, Teacher Appreciation Week, and more!

Thanks for Your Support

Thank you to the Open Door Presbyterian Church for their sponsorship and support of our Back to School Block Party last week.  Thank you to the many volunteers who came out to help make our event a success for the nearly 2,000 members of the Coates School Community!

We also want to thank Bach to Rock for helping us with the music and for sharing their talented musicians with us!

Importance of Attendance

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of 3rd grade.

How Families Can Help Make School Attendance a Priority Help Your Student Stay Engaged Communicate with the School
  • Report Future Absences
If parents are aware of a future absence, such as a full day absence for a civic engagement activity (middle or high school) or cultural observance, they may contact the school to report the absence and related date. Extended absences, typically for hardship reasons, must be documented and submitted to the school principal at least three to five school days in advance for review and action.
Did you know?
  • Regular school attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level.
  • Chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement even when the absences are "excused" or understandable.
  • Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
  • Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with peer conflicts or facing some other potentially serious difficulty, and help is available.

Student Rights & Responsibilities

FCPS' updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child's SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.

Student Rights & Responsibilities including Cell Phone Usage

The Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read the Letter from the Superintendent on the 2022-23 Student Rights and Responsibilities: A Guide for Families.Key changes to the document for the 2022-23 school year include:

  • Adding rights to protect citizenship and immigration status from unauthorized sharing.
  • Changes to FCPS’ Acceptable Use Policy Regulation for Technology.
  • A new section on cell phones.

The new section on cell phones prohibits cell phone use in classrooms. We recognize that this new policy will be a shift for many students and families this year, but research shows that managing phone use during class time will support students’ attention and ability to fully engage in their learning. Schools are partnering with parents to have students understand the importance of putting their phones away to minimize distractions during class.

Students in K-8 must keep phones silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Cell phones may only be used on campus before and after school.
