Background: The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant which requires that spending be used in specific areas.  Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs.  Schools have been given funding allocations to support the academic and wellness needs of students.  Schools are required to create plans in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Wellness highlighting the strategies they will use to support these areas using their ESSER III funding.  These strategies are shown below.

ESSER III English Language Arts Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts.

Strategy 1 Provide professional development, time for planning around word study curriculum, and resources to support students at various spelling stages.

Strategy 2 Leverage Tier 1 Core resource Imagine Language and Literacy for Small Group Tier 2 Instruction.

Strategy 3 Update classroom libraries and mentor texts to provide students with engaging titles that encourage wide and high volume reading.

Strategy 4 Teams will utilize the CLT cycle (plan, teach, assess, reflect) and participate in targeted professional learning opportunities to provide high quality literacy instruction that meets all students’ needs.

ESSER III Mathematics Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics.

Strategy 1 Small Group Instruction Supplement to the Core (Tier 2/3 supports) using Marilyn Burns "Do the Math" and other tier 2/3 supports.

Strategy 2 Leverage Tier I Core reteaching resources and small group instruction.

Strategy 3 Leverage Tier 1 Core reteaching with fact fluency.

Strategy 4 Due to the pandemic students missed two years of one-on-one instruction of de-emphasized standards.  Teachers will have purposeful instruction on these grade level standards while also spiraling back to information missed on the standards in previous grade levels.

ESSER III Wellness Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment.

Strategy 1 Provide Targeted Student Support.

Strategy 2 Provide opportunities for family engagement.

Strategy 3 Strengthen Tier 1 Evidenced- Based Strategies.

Strategy 4 Strengthen our Tier 2/3 targeted interventions and practices.

Background: All Fairfax County schools are also required to complete an access and opportunity goal as part of their School Innovation and Improvement Plan (SIIP) and can also capture additional goals.  These are shown below.

Access & Opportunity End of Year SMARTR Outcome

Goal: By June 2022, we will achieve a 5% increase in the number of black, multiracial, and Hispanic students formally participating in AAP (achieving level 3 or 4), compared to June 2021.

Strategy 1 All general education teachers continue to adopt AAP units at least once per semester to provide opportunities for all.

Strategy 2 All staff use learning from Equity Team meetings and PD to minimize bias in decision-making, instruction, and assessment regarding enrichment/extensions.

OTHER End of Year SMARTR Outcome

Goal: On the 2022 Spring SOL Reading tests, all students in grades 3-6 (including all subgroups) will increase pass rates by 5 points compared to 2021.

Strategy 1 Teachers implement a strong reading workshop model and explicit instruction of test taking strategies.

Strategy 2 Resource teachers deliver consistent, targeted instruction.

OTHER End of Year SMARTR Outcome

Goal: On the 2022 Spring SOL Math tests, the pass rate for all students will increase to at least 70%.

Strategy 1 Teachers implement a strong math workshop model and explicit instruction of test taking strategies.

Strategy 2 Resource teachers deliver consistent, targeted instruction based on data.

Strategy 3 Reteach & retest system to ensure that students get a second chance to demonstrate learning.
